International tourism to reach one billion in 2012
International tourist arrivals grew by over 4% in 2011 to 980 million,
according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. With growth
expected to continue in 2012, at a somewhat slower rate, international
tourist arrivals are on track to reach the milestone one billion mark
later this year.

More walking streets for Old Quarter
Hanoi will create extra walking streets next month for pedestrians to
enjoy the Old Quarter while promoting culture and culinary delights of
the 1,000-year-old city.
The streets Hang Buom, Hang Giay, Luong Ngoc Quyen, Ma May, Dao Duy Tu
and Ta Hien will join those already closed to traffic in the evening,
Hang Dao and Dong Xuan.

Tourists to Hanoi increase during Tet
Around 183,000 foreign tourists visited Hanoi during the lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, a year-on-year increase of 16 percent.
The city’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department said that thanks to
visa exemptions, the number of Overseas Vietnamese increased sharply to
almost 700,000.

Hue Festival features foreign performers
Twenty-four foreign art troupes from 14 countries will take part in Hue Festival 2012.
Three of the troupes, Carabosse fire performers, Combo Box jazz concert and Ego street festival come from France.

Vietnam is now at the top of the list of the world's emerging tourist
attractions, as selected by international visitors in 2012, according to
a recent report by the United States Tour Operators Association
(USTOA).

Program on January 28-29, to showcase traditional customs through games,

2011: successful year of Vietnam’s heritages
2011 was a successful year of Vietnam in terms of cultural diplomacy, as
more heritages were recognised by UNESCO, said a senior official.
Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son, who doubles as Chairman of the
Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, made the comment at a
conference to review the commission’s 2011 performance in Hanoi on Jan.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has permitted the Vietnam
Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, the Vietnam Cultural Center in
France in coordination with Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provincial

folklore in France.

Tet gathering for Overseas Vietnamese in Hanoi
A “Xuan Que Huong 2012” (Homeland Spring) programme for overseas
Vietnamese returning home to welcome the traditional Lunar New Year
festival (Tet) will be held at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ba Dinh
Square in Hanoi on January 15.

Hue royal citadel to open for free in three days
From the first to the third day of the lunar New Year 2012, all relics in the complex of Hue ancient citadel will open for free.
Phan Thanh Hai, deputy director of the Centre for Preservation of Hue
Relics, said that all relics in the Hue royal citadel will open for free
for all visitors on January 23-25.

Hanoi welcomes 1.9 million international visitors in 2011
As many as 1.9 million international visitors came to Hanoi in 2011, an
increase of 11 percent over 2010, according to the Hanoi Department of
Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Russian TV channel spotlights Vietnam
TV channel Russia-2 broadcast a one-hour program on January 2 introducing Vietnam’s country and people.
The program “Top Gear”, described a trans-Vietnam motorbike tour by
three foreigners who departed from Ho Chi Minh City and went through the
Central Highland city of Dalat and then the central cities of Nha
Trang, Danang, Hoi An, Hue and Vinh. They dropped in the capital city of
Hanoi before making their final leg in the northeastern city of Ha
Long.

Tourist project to link eight provinces
The largest tourist development project in Viet Nam will start in eight northwestern mountain provinces next year.
Local authorities, officials from the Vietnam National Administration of
Tourism (VNAT), tourism operators and training institutions in the
region gathered in Lao Cai City yesterday to discuss the plan.
